Biography
Mr. Copperthwaite, my high school shop teacher near Atlanta, Georgia, got me started with wood working many years ago. He taught me the use and cautions of the many saws and tools. While I then pursued a career in the Military, graduating from West Point with an engineering degree, and flying helicopters in Germany for several years, I was not able to exercise my interests in working with wood. After 32 years in the commercial airline industry and a move to North Carolina for 25 of them, I was able to jump back into it. With support and encouragement from my wife and two daughters, and the gift of a lathe, I was able to start turning a few years ago and I’ve been a work in progress ever since.
While turning wood is my favorite, I also enjoy working with wood in other ways, for various boards or vessels. Turning is meditative for me, as is running, which are the sources of the shop name, “10K Turnings”.
